Joyce Wooten Ownby

Virginia Joyce Wooten Ownby, 83, of Cleveland, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, September 10, 2016 with her daughter by her side.  She was a lifelong resident of Bradley County and a graduate of Bradley Central High School.  Joyce was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.  In her earlier life she enjoyed working as secretary at Big Springs Elementary School and was the first secretary at Trewhitt Elementary School.

She was the daughter of the late Wiley E. and Agnes Creasman Wooten and was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Jack L. Ownby; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Wooten Haskins and Melvin Haskins; and brother and sister-in-law, Wiley E. Wooten, Jr. and Betty Williams Wooten.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Victor Hicks; grandson, Jason Elliott and wife, Caysa, and their son, Parks; step-grandsons, Dustin Hicks and Cody Hicks and wife, Millie and their daughter, Maddy;  sister, Linda Wooten Clevenger and husband, Jerry; and sisters-in-law, Billie Wooten and Hazel Ownby.  She was “Aunt Jo” to two generations of nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate her life and love of service and her home going will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016 in the chapel of Fike-Randolph & Son Funeral Home with her nephews, Chuck Clevenger and Mike Wooten officiating.  Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens.  A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.

Her family will receive friends on Monday from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

The family would like to especially express their gratitude to the many caretakers at Brookdale (Clare Bridge) who have lovingly cared for and respected Joyce in her final years.
