Robert Allen Mitchell

August 8, 1933 — February 3, 2015

Robert Allen Mitchell, 81, of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at a Chattanooga hospital. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in South Korea in the 51st Signal Battalion. After being honorably discharged he began his career in the medical field working in VA Hospitals in Sepulveda, CA, Memphis, TN and Tuscaloosa, AL. He was the founder of the Reality Orientation program which is a part of the Geriatric treatment that is being used in VA Hospitals and nursing homes today. He received a superior performance award in his honor with an article published in staff magazine. After moving to Cleveland in 1971 Robert began working as an assistant to Dr. William Marsh at the VA outpatient clinic in Chattanooga. After his retirement his interest was working with Hiwassee Mental Health and was loved by all the staff and members. He enjoyed being with family and working in his yard gardening where he has a memory garden in memory of loved ones gone on. He was an active member of the Spring Place Church of God of Prophecy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Mitchell; two daughters, Charlotte Diane Mitchell and Monica "Lisa" Ledford; parents, Richmond and Annie Mitchell; five brothers; one sister; and his in-laws, Kendrick and Cleo Linville. Survivors include his two grandchildren, Michael Ledford and wife, Amanda of Ringgold, GA and Melissa Williams and husband, Corey of Cleveland; son-in-law, Jeff Ledford and wife, Joy of Maryville; brother, Claude Mitchell of Jerome, ID; brothers-in-law, James Linville and wife, Marie of Cleveland and Jimmy Majors of Brent, AL; sister-in-law, Cosetta Stephens and husband, Creed of Fruitland Park, FL; great grandsons, Nicholas Ledford of Ringgold, GA and Caycee Williams and Canyon Williams, both of Cleveland; step granddaughters, Hannah, Lora and Vanessa Jenkins; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. A remembrance of life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Wright and Phyllis Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors. Victor Rodriguez, Nicholas Rodriguez, Adam Rodriguez, Ben Rodriguez, Randy Lawson and Brett Watson will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Willis Holt, Amos Watson, Ronald Morrison, Victor Calfee, Ronald Wright and Jim Gold. His family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
