Clyde Johnston Hodgkins Tidwell

February 4, 1925 — September 18, 2006

Clyde Johnston Hodgkins Tidwell, a descendant of several of Bradley County's pioneer families, died on Monday, September 18, 2006, at Alexian Village on Signal Mountain. She was a Roman Catholic.

Mrs. Tidwell was born in Cleveland on February 4, 1925, to Ray Hodgkins and Frances Steed Hodgkins. She was educated at St. Mary's in Sewanee, Stephens College in Columbia, MO, and the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. During World War II, she was a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines. She was a columnist and feature editor for the Cleveland Daily Banner, and taught school for over 20 years in Bradley County at Oak Grove Elementary and Trewhitt Jr. High Schools.

She is survived by two daughters, Clyde Austin and her husband Walter of Macon, GA, and Kitty Frye and her husband Gil Martinez of Knoxville; three sons, Tom Tidwell and his wife Mary of Signal Mountain, Chris Tidwell and his wife Jane of Atlanta, and Dan Tidwell and his wife Karen of Tuscaloosa, AL; thirteen grandchildren, Terrell Austin of Athens, GA, Tucker, Graham and Ben Austin of Macon, Campbell Austin of Jacksonville, FL, Gib Frye of Knoxville, Tate and Anna Tidwell of Chattanooga, Rachel Tidwell of Nashville, Adrienne, Lauren and Anna Kate Tidwell of Tuscaloosa, Christopher Tidwell of Atlanta, and eight great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by the Rev. P.J. McGinnity and the Rev. Mike Nolan at St. Therese Catholic Church in Cleveland on Thursday, September 21 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Ft. Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Tighe, Jim Park, David Hardeman, David Hanger, Dinos Metaxas and Allen Vessels.

The family will receive friends at the church parish hall from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday. There will be a rosary service at the church at Alexian Village on James Bvld. on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
