Alton W. Herndon

December 17, 1914 — August 24, 2007

Alton W. Herndon, 92, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Friday, August 24, 2007 in a Chattanooga hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Cleveland since 1945 where he was a former Sunday School teacher and an usher. He was president and chairman of Cleveland Foundry and Manufacturing Company Inc. where he was actively involved for 62 years. He was very active in the Gideon's International.

Mr. Herndon was the son of the late Alton Herndon and Sylvia Sanders Herndon and was also preceded in death by his wife, Dovie E. Herndon; brother, William (Jim) Herndon and two sisters, Sylvia Adams and Lillian Smith.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert A. and Susen Herndon of Ooltewah; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra E. and Kenneth Mantooth of Cleveland; one granddaughter, Michelle Hammond of Rockhill, S.C.; one great-grandson, David Hammond of Rockhill, S.C.; step-grandchildren: Christopher Neary of Chattanooga, Tyfani Neary of Clearwater, Florida, Janie Kraft of Harrison, TN and Alexandrea Kraft of Harrison, TN; one sister, Nonetta Smith of Murfreesboro; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 27, 2007 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Moncrief officiating. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with Max Finkle, Don Smith, Gary Adams, Ed Bullard, Craig Smith, Terry Hancock and Ray David Smith serving as pallbearers. The service will conclude with a white dove release ceremony.

His family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
