Betty Joyce Mclain

August 30, 1932 — January 1, 2023

Betty Joyce McLain (30 August 1932 - 1 January 2023) died on New Year's Day at the Life Care Center of Cleveland, after a brief illness. She was the oldest daughter of Thomas Lloyd McLain and Mattie Latimer McLain, little sister to Theron Lavern McLain, and big sister to Barbara McLain Walker and Patricia Gayle McLain. Betty graduated from Bradley High School (now Bradley Central High) in 1950 and went on to attend Lee College (now Lee University) and art school. She was bookkeeper for the Cleveland Utility Board for over 40 years and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland. She was a talented artist, illustrating her high school yearbook and continuing to draw and paint for much of her life. Most of all, Betty was a loving and beloved sister and aunt. She is survived by her sister Gayle and her nephews and nieces, Andy & Sherry Walker and Blake & Missy Walker, as well as great nephew Tyler Walker (husband to Flora) and great niece Taylor Walker. Betty lived long enough to see photos of her new great-great nephew, Edwin Reed Walker, which made her glow. She doted over her nephews, who as children frequently fought each other for the privilege of being the first to get his back scratched by Aunt Betty and her perfect nails. Betty might well have been the kindest, most gentle, most gracious person on Earth. Even as her health declined with age, she had a smile that beamed like a spotlight through darkness, and briefly brought youth back to her face. She and her smile will be missed. The family will hold a graveside service at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, with Fike-Randolph & Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please make a gift in memory of Betty to First United Methodist Church, 3425 North Ocoee Street, Cleveland, TN 37312.
