Helen Diane Darcey

Helen Diane Darcey, 72, of Cleveland, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, November 9, 2019. She was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and she was preceded in death by her parents Jesse J. Darcey and Gertrude Gibson Darcey. She earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and EdS degrees in Mathematics from the University of Alabama.

Helen retired after 30 years of service at Cleveland State Community College as Associate Professor of Mathematics.  While at Cleveland State, Helen served on numerous committees including Faculty Senate, Library, Website, Faculty Development, Tenure and Promotion, and others. She also served as a facilitator for the Pages Book Club for 3 years; she enjoyed reading science fiction novels and collecting fantasy-inspired collectibles.  In 2001 she organized and hosted the Third Annual Southeast Tennessee Faculty Development Colloquium.

Helen did find great joy in traveling with her friends Janet Caruth, Patricia Bishop, and Tola Garner. She also enjoyed her hobby of beading and creating costume jewelry.

Helen was a member of First United Methodist Church where she had participated in Chancel Choir and exercise classes and was a member of St. Andrew’s Sunday School Class and May Dooley Circle.

Helen is survived by her special fur babies, Lessa and Albert. She is also survived by her close friends Sonny Moss, Alan Goslen, Linda Kincaid, Tola Garner and a number of friends at First United Methodist Church and colleagues at Cleveland State Community College.

A gathering of friends will be at 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, at Fike Funeral Home in Cleveland; a memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor Curtis McKee of First United Methodist Church  officiating.
