Irene G Green

Irene Green, age 83, a resident of Cleveland, passed away suddenly on April 17, 2023, surrounded by her grandchildren.

Irene was born a coal-miner’s daughter in Middlesbrough, Kentucky, a girl with a little sugar and a whole lot of spice. She moved to Niota at 16 and then to Cleveland when she married the love of her life, William H. “Junior” Green.

She was a long-time employee at Duracell, and she served up her famous rolls and sweet tea with the wit and wisdom of a strict lunch lady to students and staff at Michigan Avenue Elementary for many years.

Irene was one of those people who spoke her mind and wasn’t afraid to share it. If she liked you, she would make you an apple stack cake or chocolate birthday cake every year or deliver homemade goodies when she felt like it. And well – if she didn’t like you, you certainly knew it.

Even well into her 70s, she could outpace her children and grandchildren in the garden and kitchen, wearing loud pants and telling it like it is with love.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William H. “Junior” Green, daughter Kathy Christ, and brother Steve Wilson.

Irene is survived by her grandchildren: Cody Christ, Cory Christ, James Melton, Jennie Wilkison, Kimmy Goodwin, Christan Headrick, Caitlin Julian, and Danny Morrison; son: Alan Green, and daughters: Helen Bruce, Sarah Green, and Amy Green. She is also survived by her sisters: Wanda Brummett, Peggy Byrge, Patsy Ammons, Shirley Hood, Edna Leamon and Betty Overton; and 11 great-grandchildren, and soon to be great-great- grandchildren. 

She was an irreplaceable woman in our lives, and she will be dearly missed.

The family will receive friends, 5-8 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Fike Randolph & Son Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 am in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jimmy Parm officiating. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens will follow.
